Description

Beef Lombardi Casserole is a hearty, comforting baked dish made with seasoned ground beef, tender egg noodles, rich tomato sauce, and creamy layers of sour cream, cottage cheese, and melted cheddar. This classic American casserole is perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or meal prep, delivering a warm, cheesy, and satisfying flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook egg noodles according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  4. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant.
  5. Stir in tomato sauce and diced tomatoes, then simmer for 5–10 minutes to develop flavor.
  6. In a medium bowl, mix sour cream and cottage cheese until smooth and creamy.
  7. Spread half of the cooked noodles into the baking dish, followed by half of the creamy mixture and half of the beef sauce.
  8. Repeat the layers with remaining noodles, cream mixture, and beef sauce.
  9. Top evenly with shredded cheddar cheese.
  10. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
  11. Let the Beef Lombardi Casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow layers to set.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the noodles to avoid a mushy texture in the casserole.
  • Let the casserole rest before serving so it holds its shape better.
  • Ground turkey or chicken can be used instead of beef for a lighter version.
  • Ricotta cheese can replace cottage cheese for a smoother texture.
  • Drain excess fat from beef to prevent a greasy casserole.
  • Beef Lombardi Casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
