Description

This turkey melt is the ultimate comfort food, featuring layers of smoked turkey, crispy bacon, fresh spinach, and melty cheddar cheese between buttery, golden-brown sourdough slices. Quick to make and easy to customize, it’s the perfect lunch or dinner for busy days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices sourdough or thick, crusty bread
  • 2 tablespoons honey mustard
  • 2 slices white cheddar cheese, cut in half
  • 4 slices deli turkey
  • 1 medium red tomato, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup fresh baby spinach
  • 4 strips cooked bacon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Lay four slices of sourdough on a cutting board. Evenly spread ½ tablespoon of honey mustard on each slice, ensuring full coverage for flavor.
  2. Layer the cheese and turkey: Cut two slices of white cheddar cheese in half to create four pieces. Place one half-slice on each slice of bread. Divide the turkey evenly between two of the bread slices, placing two slices of turkey per sandwich.
  3. Add the vegetables: Arrange thin tomato slices over the turkey, followed by ¼ cup of fresh baby spinach on each sandwich. Press down gently to keep the layers stable.
  4. Incorporate the bacon: Place two strips of cooked bacon on the remaining two slices of cheese-topped bread. This will balance the flavors and add a crispy texture.
  5. Assemble the sandwich: Close the sandwiches by placing the bacon-covered bread slices face down onto the turkey-topped slices, ensuring all layers are evenly stacked.
  6. Butter the bread: Spread softened butter evenly over the outside of each slice of bread to create a crisp, golden-brown crust when toasted.
  7. Toast the sandwich: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Once warm, place the sandwiches in the pan and toast for 3 to 4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip carefully and toast the other side for another 3 to 4 minutes until the cheese melts completely and the sandwich is heated through.
  8. Serve and enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them sit for a minute before slicing in half. Serve warm with your favorite side dishes.

Notes

  • To achieve an ultra-crispy crust, use mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside of the bread before toasting.
  • For a spicier kick, swap honey mustard for Dijon mustard or add a dash of hot sauce.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Reheat in a skillet over low heat to maintain crispiness.
  • If using leftover roasted turkey, toast the sandwich on lower heat for a longer time to ensure it warms through without burning the bread.
