Description

A comforting classic diner-style sandwich featuring juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melty cheese, and a tangy secret sauce, perfect for beginner cooks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • Butter, for grilling
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce to make the secret sauce. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 15–20 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  4. In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked. Set aside.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place 4 slices, butter-side down, on a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  6. Top each slice with a slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, a slice of cheddar cheese, and a second slice of bread (butter-side up).
  7. Cook sandwiches until golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 2–3 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula for even browning if needed.
  8. Let sandwiches rest for a minute before slicing in half. Serve with the secret sauce on the side or drizzled over the top.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey or a plant-based patty for a lighter or vegetarian version.
  • Try different cheeses like pepper jack for variety.
  • Cover skillet briefly to help melt cheese faster.
  • Caramelize onions fully to avoid soggy sandwiches.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheated in a skillet or toaster oven.
