Description

This homemade bread recipe is a simple and foolproof way to bake a soft, fluffy loaf. With just a few basic ingredients, you’ll create a delicious bread perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying with butter and jam.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup honey or granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 45 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Proof the yeast by adding warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar or honey to a large bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add remaining sugar or honey, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour. Mix to combine.
  3. Gradually add remaining flour (1/2 cup at a time) until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is slightly sticky to the touch.
  4. Knead the dough for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 ½ hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch the dough down and divide into two portions. Shape into logs and place in greased loaf pans.
  7. Cover with plastic wrap or a towel and let rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until risen 1 inch above the loaf pans.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30-33 minutes, until golden brown and hollow when tapped.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack. Brush with butter if desired.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast for best results.
  • Be careful not to add too much flour, as it can make the bread dense. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  • If you prefer, you can substitute olive oil for vegetable oil for a richer flavor.
  • To speed up the rising process, place the dough in a slightly warmed oven (around 180°F) with the oven turned off and door cracked open.
  • For variations, consider adding cinnamon sugar for a sweet twist or raisins for a fruity flavor.
