Description

Soft and chewy homemade naan bread that’s beginner-friendly, quick to make, and perfect for pairing with dips, curries, or as a flatbread wrap.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/23 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add olive oil, yogurt, egg, salt, and flour. Stir until smooth, then knead until the dough is soft and smooth.
  3. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  4. Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-inch circle about 3–5 mm thick.
  5. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add a little oil and cook each circle for 2–3 minutes on one side until bubbles form, then flip and cook for another 2–3 minutes.
  6. Brush with melted butter (add garlic if using). Serve warm.

Notes

  • Roll dough to the right thickness—too thin and it will be crispy, too thick and it won’t bubble.
  • A cast iron skillet works best for even cooking.
  • Use bread flour for extra chewiness.
  • You can freeze the dough or cooked naan for later use.
