Description
Homemade Pumpkin Jam is a cozy, spiced fall preserve made with fresh pumpkin, citrus, and warm spices. It’s smooth, flavorful, and perfect for spreading on toast, gifting during the holidays, or using in a variety of sweet and savory dishes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 small sugar pumpkin (about 2 cups of pumpkin puree)
- 1 ½ cups sugar
- ½ cup water
- 1 medium orange (zested and juiced)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Peel the sugar pumpkin, remove seeds, and cut into cubes. Steam or boil for 15–20 minutes until tender. Mash into a smooth puree (yielding about 2 cups).
- In a medium saucepan, combine pumpkin puree, sugar, water, orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon stick, ginger, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine.
- Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
- Stir in vanilla extract and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and discard the cinnamon stick.
- Transfer the hot jam to sterilized jars and seal tightly. Allow to cool before refrigerating, or use canning methods for long-term storage.
Notes
- Add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes for a spicy version.
- Use lemon or lime zest instead of orange for a citrus twist.
- Add chopped pineapple for a tropical variation.
- Canned pumpkin puree can be used instead of fresh—just make sure it’s 100% pumpkin.
- For long-term storage, process jars using water bath canning.
