Description

Homemade Pumpkin Jam is a cozy, spiced fall preserve made with fresh pumpkin, citrus, and warm spices. It’s smooth, flavorful, and perfect for spreading on toast, gifting during the holidays, or using in a variety of sweet and savory dishes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 small sugar pumpkin (about 2 cups of pumpkin puree)
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 medium orange (zested and juiced)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Peel the sugar pumpkin, remove seeds, and cut into cubes. Steam or boil for 15–20 minutes until tender. Mash into a smooth puree (yielding about 2 cups).
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine pumpkin puree, sugar, water, orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon stick, ginger, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
  4. Stir in vanilla extract and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and discard the cinnamon stick.
  5. Transfer the hot jam to sterilized jars and seal tightly. Allow to cool before refrigerating, or use canning methods for long-term storage.

Notes

  • Add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes for a spicy version.
  • Use lemon or lime zest instead of orange for a citrus twist.
  • Add chopped pineapple for a tropical variation.
  • Canned pumpkin puree can be used instead of fresh—just make sure it’s 100% pumpkin.
  • For long-term storage, process jars using water bath canning.
