Description
This Kielbasa Potato Soup is a hearty, creamy, and flavorful comfort food featuring smoky kielbasa sausage, tender potatoes, and a rich broth, perfect for cozy family dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb kielbasa sausage, sliced into half-moons: Adds smoky flavor and protein
- 4 medium potatoes (about 2 lbs), peeled and diced: Provides creamy texture and makes the soup filling
- 1 medium onion (about 150 g), chopped: Builds a sweet and savory flavor base
- 2 cloves garlic (about 6 g), minced: Enhances aroma and depth of taste
- 4 cups (960 ml) chicken broth: Forms the flavorful liquid base
- 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk: Adds creaminess
- 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream: Enriches the soup with a velvety texture
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) olive oil: For sautéing ingredients
- 1 teaspoon (1 g) dried thyme: Adds herbal warmth
- Salt and pepper to taste: Essential for seasoning
- 2 tablespoons (16 g) all-purpose flour (optional): Thickens the soup
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional): Adds freshness and color
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add sliced kielbasa and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes. Remove and set aside.
- Sauté chopped onion and garlic in the same pot for 3–4 minutes until soft and fragrant.
- Add diced potatoes and chicken broth, stir, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes until potatoes are tender.
- Whisk flour into milk (if using) and slowly pour into the soup, stirring to avoid lumps. Stir in heavy cream and simmer for 5–10 minutes.
- Return cooked kielbasa to the pot, add thyme, salt, and pepper, and simmer for another 5 minutes to meld flavors.
- Ladle into bowls, garnish with parsley if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
- Russet potatoes are ideal because they naturally thicken the soup.
- Browning the kielbasa enhances smoky flavor.
- Add extra vegetables like carrots, celery, or spinach for more nutrition and color.
- Simmer gently to prevent potatoes from becoming mushy.
- For extra richness, incorporate cream cheese with heavy cream.
