Description

Pumpkin Pie Jam is a sweet and spiced preserve made with pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, and pumpkin pie spice. This easy-to-make jam captures the flavors of autumn in a jar, perfect for spreading on toast, pairing with cheese, or using in baked goods.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of Pumpkin or Squash: The base of the jam, offering a natural sweetness and creamy texture.
  • 1/4 cup of Water: To help cook the pumpkin and create a smooth consistency.
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick: Adds a warm, comforting spice to balance the sweetness of the pumpkin.
  • 1 tablespoon of Fresh Ginger (grated): Provides a subtle heat and enhances the flavors of the spices.
  • 2 teaspoons of Pumpkin Pie Spice (or Mixed Spice): Brings in the classic autumn flavors, such as nutmeg and allspice.
  • 2 tablespoons of Lemon Juice: Adds acidity to balance the sweetness and helps preserve the jam.
  • 3 cups of Jam Sugar: Ensures the jam sets properly, with the added pectin aiding in the consistency.

Instructions

  1. Start by placing the chopped pumpkin or squash into a large preserving pan. Add the water, grated ginger, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 30-40 minutes, until the pumpkin is tender.
  3. Once the pumpkin is cooked, remove the cinnamon stick and use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth.
  4. Keep the puree on a low heat. Stir in the jam sugar and ensure it’s fully dissolved. Then, add the lemon juice and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
  5. Let the jam boil for 5 to 8 minutes, or until the jam reaches setting point (104°C or 220°F). You can use a jam thermometer or the wrinkle test to check the consistency.
  6. Once the jam is set, remove it from the heat and pour it into sterilized jars. Seal and allow to cool.

Notes

  • Ensure that your jam jars are properly sterilized before use to avoid contamination.
  • If you don’t have a jam thermometer, use the wrinkle test. Drop a small spoonful of jam onto a cold saucer and let it cool. Run your finger through it; if it wrinkles, the jam is ready.
  • Be cautious with the boiling time. Overcooking the jam can result in a too-thick consistency, so check frequently after the 5-minute mark.
