Description

This Slow Cooker Apple Butter recipe is an easy, homemade treat that’s spiced to perfection with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. With just a few simple ingredients and a slow cooker, you can create a smooth, flavorful spread that’s perfect for toast, biscuits, or as a gift. The rich, sweet, and spiced taste makes this apple butter a must-try in the fall or any time of year.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 lbs apples (Gala or Fuji recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 dashes salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into small pieces. Add them to the slow cooker.
  2. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt to the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or HIGH for 5 hours, until apples are soft and cooked down.
  4. Transfer the cooked mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. Alternatively, use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker.
  5. If the apple butter is too thin, cook uncovered on HIGH for 45-60 minutes, stirring frequently until thickened to your desired consistency.
  6. Allow to cool, then store in containers or jars. Refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

  • For a thicker consistency, cook the apple butter uncovered on HIGH after blending.
  • For a chunkier texture, use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker.
  • Apple butter can be frozen for up to a year. Be sure to leave space at the top of jars for expansion during freezing.
  • If you don’t have the individual spices, you can substitute with 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice.
