Ingredients
Scale
- 5 lbs apples (Gala or Fuji recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 2 dashes salt
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into small pieces. Add them to the slow cooker.
- Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt to the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or HIGH for 5 hours, until apples are soft and cooked down.
- Transfer the cooked mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. Alternatively, use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker.
- If the apple butter is too thin, cook uncovered on HIGH for 45-60 minutes, stirring frequently until thickened to your desired consistency.
- Allow to cool, then store in containers or jars. Refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for longer storage.
Notes
- For a thicker consistency, cook the apple butter uncovered on HIGH after blending.
- For a chunkier texture, use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker.
- Apple butter can be frozen for up to a year. Be sure to leave space at the top of jars for expansion during freezing.
- If you don’t have the individual spices, you can substitute with 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice.
