Description

Classic homemade baked beans made with navy beans, bacon, and a rich sweet and smoky sauce. This comforting side dish is perfect for BBQs, family dinners, and make-ahead meals, delivering deep flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

  • Navy beans (4 cans, 15 oz each): creamy base for classic baked beans
  • Bacon (8 slices, chopped): adds smoky, savory depth
  • Yellow onion (1 medium, diced): brings sweetness and aroma
  • Brown sugar (1/2 cup): provides sweetness and caramelization
  • Molasses (1/4 cup): adds rich, deep flavor and color
  • Ketchup (1/2 cup): creates tangy tomato-based sauce
  • Yellow mustard (2 tbsp): balances sweetness with mild acidity
  • Worcestershire sauce (1 tbsp): adds umami depth
  • Garlic powder (1 tsp): enhances savory flavor
  • Black pepper (1/2 tsp): adds mild heat
  • Salt (1 tsp): enhances overall flavor

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a large baking dish for the baked beans mixture.
  2. Cook chopped bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, then remove excess grease while keeping a small amount for flavor.
  3. Add diced onion to the skillet and sauté until soft and translucent, allowing natural sweetness to develop.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked bacon, sautéed onions, drained navy beans, brown sugar, molasses, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt.
  5. Stir everything together until the baked beans mixture is fully coated and evenly combined.
  6. Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly for consistent cooking.
  7. Bake uncovered for 60–75 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the baked beans are thick, bubbly, and caramelized.
  8. Remove from oven and let the baked beans rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken further.

Notes

  • Baked beans can be made a day ahead for deeper flavor development.
  • For thicker baked beans, bake uncovered for the full cooking time.
  • For vegetarian baked beans, omit bacon and add smoked paprika for depth.
  • Baked beans can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze leftover baked beans in an airtight container for up to 2 months.
