Description

Boston Cream Donuts are soft, fluffy yeast donuts filled with rich vanilla custard and topped with a smooth chocolate glaze. This homemade recipe delivers bakery-style results with a perfect balance of creamy, sweet, and indulgent flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk (for custard)
  • 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for glaze)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add yeast mixture, eggs, and butter, then mix into a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Prepare the custard by heating milk and vanilla. Whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch, then slowly add warm milk. Cook until thickened and let cool.
  5. Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into rounds. Let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  6. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry donuts until golden brown on both sides. Drain and cool.
  7. Fill donuts with custard using a piping bag.
  8. Melt chocolate with cream and dip the tops of donuts into the glaze.
  9. Allow glaze to set before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure yeast is fresh for proper dough rise.
  • Maintain oil temperature to avoid greasy donuts.
  • Cool donuts completely before filling to prevent runny custard.
  • Do not overfill to avoid bursting.
  • Best served fresh for optimal texture and flavor.
