Description

These homemade Chocolate Pop Tarts are the perfect combination of a rich chocolate filling and a flaky, buttery pastry. Whether you’re craving a sweet breakfast or a snack, these pop tarts are quick to prepare and easy to customize. They are made from scratch, with no artificial ingredients, offering a delicious, homemade alternative to the store-bought version.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter (chilled and cubed)
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add chilled butter and cut it into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Once chilled, roll the dough on a floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 3×4 inch rectangles.
  4. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips and heavy cream in 20-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
  5. Place a spoonful of chocolate filling on half of the dough rectangles. Brush the edges with egg wash, then top with the remaining dough rectangles. Press and crimp the edges to seal.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place pop tarts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and brush with egg wash.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool.
  8. Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to make a glaze. Drizzle over cooled pop tarts and let the glaze set before serving.

Notes

  • Chill the dough before rolling to help with handling and flakiness.
  • If using store-bought dough, ensure it’s rolled thin enough for the best texture.
  • Store leftover pop tarts in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature.
  • For a healthier twist, consider using whole wheat flour or dark chocolate chips.
