Description

Classic glazed doughnuts are a timeless treat that combines a light, fluffy dough with a sweet and shiny glaze. They are easy to make at home and perfect for breakfast, dessert, or as an afternoon snack. This simple recipe ensures that you achieve bakery-quality doughnuts without any fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes, until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into doughnut shapes using a doughnut cutter or two round cutters.
  6. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry doughnuts for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  7. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar and milk until smooth.
  8. Dip each doughnut into the glaze, covering completely. Let excess glaze drip off and allow doughnuts to set for a few minutes.

Notes

  • Ensure yeast mixture is frothy before adding it to the dough to guarantee a good rise.
  • Do not overcrowd the frying pan; fry doughnuts in small batches.
  • If the glaze is too thick, add more milk to reach the desired consistency.
  • Leftover doughnuts can be stored at room temperature for up to two days or frozen for up to a month.
