Description
Danish Butter Cookies are classic crisp cookies known for their rich buttery flavor, delicate texture, and beautiful piped shapes. Made with simple ingredients like butter, sugar, flour, and vanilla, these traditional European cookies are perfect for holidays, gifting, or enjoying with coffee or tea.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons coarse sugar or decorative sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and creamy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until fully combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture while mixing on low speed.
- Add the milk and mix until the dough becomes soft and pipeable.
- Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
- Pipe the dough onto the prepared baking sheet in swirls, rings, or S-shaped patterns.
- Sprinkle coarse sugar or decorative sprinkles on top if desired.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes or until the edges become lightly golden.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Make sure the butter is softened but not melted to prevent excessive spreading.
- If the dough is too stiff for piping, add a small amount of milk to loosen it.
- Chill the dough for 15–20 minutes if the cookies lose their shape during piping.
- Use a large star piping tip to create the classic ridged Danish butter cookie shape.
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
