Description

Green Velvet Cake And Cupcakes are a festive twist on classic velvet cake, featuring a soft, moist crumb with a hint of cocoa and topped with rich cream cheese frosting. Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any celebration that calls for a vibrant, eye-catching dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon green food coloring (or as needed)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners or grease cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Mix in vanilla extract and green food coloring until evenly colored.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the batter, mixing gently until just combined.
  7. Stir in vinegar.
  8. Divide batter evenly into prepared pans.
  9. Bake cupcakes for 18–22 minutes or cake layers for 28–32 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  10. Cool completely before frosting.
  11. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until creamy.
  12. Frost cooled cake or cupcakes as desired.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the crumb tender.
  • Use gel food coloring for a more vibrant green color.
  • Allow cake or cupcakes to cool fully before frosting to avoid melting.
  • Store frosted cupcakes in the refrigerator for best freshness.
