Description

Traditional Irish Soda Bread is a classic no-yeast bread made with simple pantry ingredients. It features a crisp golden crust, a tender crumb, and a mild tang from buttermilk, making it perfect for everyday meals or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet or lightly grease a cast iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until a soft, shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf without kneading.
  5. Place the loaf on the prepared baking surface and cut a deep cross on top using a sharp knife.
  6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  7. Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the dough to avoid a dense texture.
  • If buttermilk is unavailable, mix milk with lemon juice or vinegar as a substitute.
  • Irish soda bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated briefly to refresh the crust.
  • For a heartier loaf, replace part of the flour with whole wheat flour.
