Description

Red Velvet Sugar Cookies are soft, chewy cookies with a subtle cocoa flavor and vibrant red color. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they offer the classic red velvet taste in an easy, bakery-style sugar cookie form that stays tender for days.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour – 1 1/4 cups
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder – 1 tablespoon
  • Baking soda – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter, softened – 1/2 cup
  • Granulated sugar – 3/4 cup
  • Egg yolk – 1 large
  • Milk or cream – 1 tablespoon
  • Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
  • Red food coloring – 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in the egg yolk, vanilla extract, milk, and red food coloring until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix just until combined.
  6. Scoop the dough into evenly sized balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 9–11 minutes, until the edges are set and the centers look slightly soft.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

  • Do not overbake to keep the cookies soft and chewy.
  • Chill the dough briefly if it feels too soft to handle.
  • Gel food coloring can be used for a more intense red color.
  • Cookies stay soft for several days when stored in an airtight container.
