Ingredients
Scale
- 5 tablespoons (56 grams) salted butter, softened
- 3 ½ cups (420 grams) all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup (50 grams) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon (9 grams) instant yeast
- ¾ cup (170 grams) lukewarm water (100-110°F)
- 32 ounces 80/20 ground beef
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter, lard, or vegetable oil
- 8 slices white cheese (American, Cheddar, Provolone, Havarti, etc.)
- Burger toppings: ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles
Instructions
- Grease 8 skull cavities in a Nordic Ware skull pan with butter.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, yeast, egg, and softened butter. Pour in lukewarm water and mix until smooth.
- Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 1-2 hours.
- Once the dough has risen, divide it into 8 equal portions and press each portion into the skull cavities of the pan.
- Cover and let the dough rise again for 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the buns for 14-18 minutes, depending on your desired color. Rotate the pans halfway through baking.
- Remove the buns from the pan, brush with melted butter, and let them cool completely before slicing.
- Shape the ground beef into skull shapes, slightly larger than the skull pan. Season with salt and pepper.
- Heat butter, lard, or oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the burgers for 3 minutes on each side. Add a slice of cheese to each burger and melt it under a lid.
- Assemble the cheeseburger skulls by placing a cooked burger on the bottom half of a skull-shaped bun. Add toppings like lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, and more. Place the top half of the bun and serve.
Notes
- You can make the hamburger buns up to 3 days ahead and store them in an airtight container.
- The burgers can be cooked to rare (120°F) and then reheated before serving to keep them juicy.
- If you don’t have a skull pan, you can use any other shape or bake the buns as regular round buns.
- For a lighter color, bake the buns for 14 minutes; for a darker golden brown, bake for 16-18 minutes.
- Use a serrated knife to slice the buns for clean edges.
